A Calling To Serve

Poetic Bloomings Prompt #118 – Working, Working.  Write a poem about work.

Written for a friend’s stepfather who recently responded to the alarm and didn’t make it home.

Called To Serve

Black soot,
billowing smoke
lunge toward him.

Heat stress,
dehydration
are partial enemies.

Structure weakens.
Walls cave in,
flames won’t retreat
and neither will he.

Beams ablaze
crumble downward.
Life comingles with ashes.

Every step in danger.
Every step his duty.
Every inch the hero.
