Before The Fire Burns

In an instant, it is over and done
with each of us weary from the battle.
Two adults skirmished and nobody won.

Sound arguments become senseless prattle.
Close quarters can easily breed contempt
with each of us weary from the battle.

Even the strongest pair are not exempt.
Relationships are frequently like that.
Close quarters can easily breed contempt.

We’ve grown to understand it’s just a spat.
It does not define the couple we are.
Relationships are frequently like that.

Only a blemish which won’t leave a scar,
we will always walk away friends because
it does not define the couple we are.

Frustrations are part of natural laws.
In an instant, it is over and done.
We will always walk away friends because
two adults skirmished and nobody won.

I’m so honored to have this poem make the Terzanelle Form Challenge’s Top Ten list at Robert Lee Brewer’s Poetic Asides Blog on WritersDigest.com. It’s humbling to be included with such incredibly talented poets.
